The introduction of various species to the great space ark, Infinity Horizon, led to a rapid process of adaptation as they began to fill in new niches – adaptations that have only become more pronounced with time.
One of such is the white siren. A descendant of Earth’s dugongs, white sirens can measure up to 5 meters and weigh more than 250 kilograms. They sustain themselves purely off various algae and seagrass, which is also why they usually stick to more open areas, like seagrass meadows. Possessing neither agility nor any form of defense, the white siren is largely hapless against an attack, barely able to escape its various natural predators. It doesn’t help that its skin has a sizable bright white spot covering most of its back and underside, making it stand out extremely well.
Yet, this docile creature is protected by a vicious guardian…
Enter the assassin dolphin. This is a rather large and rather horrifying carnivore, weighing in at approximately 12-18 tonnes and measuring up to 15 meters in length. It spends most of its time stalking the deep seagrass fields, waiting for its prey to come to it.
The assassin dolphin shares a mutualistic relationship with the white sirens. Acting as their shepherd, the dolphin will keep a low profile and observe while the white sirens forage in the fields, looking out for any other predators who might be attracted by the clearly visible and seemingly easy prey. Those unfortunate enough to try their hand at catching the siren off-guard instead find themselves between the jaws of the assassin dolphin.
Through this arrangement, both species can actively help ensure each other’s survival, the white sirens acting as bait for the bigger predator in exchange for the protection offered by it.
